Thanksgiving outfit ideas
After years of the same Thanksgiving outfit, I’m feeling a change this year. While I haven’t worn the same outfit literally every single year since 2008, the J. Peterman wool challis skirt has captured probably 70% of turkey days during that time. Looking back now, during the non-Peterman years, I was wearing the same basic outfit with a different paisley skirt.
Are you in a rut, too, or just not sure about your look? The occasions that trip me up as far as knowing what to wear are those in-between, half-casual, slightly dressy ones. It can be hard to strike the balance, and Thanksgiving is definitely one of those occasions.
Thanksgiving is the last hurrah for fall clothes, so I always use an autumn color palette - burgundy, sage, olive, gold, cranberry, pumpkin, and brown are good colors to consider. I particularly love a fall floral or paisley for Thanksgiving. More than any other holiday, comfort is key. For me, this is not a trouser holiday. Skirts and dresses have more room for those pumpkin pie seconds.
The Julia Amory Dunmore Dress is my pick for Thanksgiving this year. It’s looser fit, more a caftan than a dress. I can and will surreptitiously loosen that belt tie if necessary. It’s on its way to my house as I type. As of yesterday (11-13-22), there’s still an active promo code for free shipping on JA dresses, freeship200. I bought the Campo color, but Sable would be perfect for T-day, too. My plan for the green is to wear it for Christmas Day also.
I also like this autumn dress from Doen, which has been making the rounds on Instagram. It’s supposed to be very cold here on Thanksgiving, and this would pair nicely with boots and a loose cardigan.
It depends on how casual your family’s celebration is, but I’m in love with all of the Bosie fair isles this year. They’d pair well with these pull-on, stretchy waistband trousers from Avenue Montaigne.
Bonus - girls’ options!
Seven Lantern Lane Thanksgiving collection - if you have babies/toddlers, these are so cute and well made. We’ve also worn the Pumpkin Dress on Thanksgiving. The owner, Lauren, was a previous Style Profile guest!
