Quick house update
If you’re a subscriber to my email list, you know we’ve been trying to renovate our master bedroom/adjacent sitting room for quite some time. We hadn’t made much progress up until this past weekend, but it’s now (hopefully) going to come together by the end of summer!
The master bedroom is part of an addition to the original 1904 structure. We think it was added sometime during the 1990s. Unfortunately, despite being newer construction, it didn’t have a closet, so we added a walk-in closet in early 2020, pre-pandemic.
Aside from removing all the cheap, narrow woodwork and painting the space Farrow & Ball Dayroom Yellow, we somewhat stalled on this reno. Other projects and commitments took us away from the next step, adding new woodwork. If we had realized how easy it is to install crown moulding, I think we’d have done this step much sooner!
Over the weekend, we added doorframes, window frames and crown moulding with corner blocks. We also installed new curtain rods. This week, I’ll be painting the new woodwork (Farrow & Ball Wimborne White), and hopefully the new drapes and cloud shades will be up soon, too!
Next on the horizon is to add a tester canopy and matching headboard to the bed and install new flooring. We found hardwood upon removing the carpet in the rest of the upstairs, but the 1990s addition only has ugly asbestos tile under the carpet and the sitting room’s hardwood isn’t salvageable. The previous owners glued a carpet underlayment over top of the wood. So, we’re just going to add new flooring that matches the original hardwood as closely as possible.
Our next big upgrade in this space is a built-in dresser/cabinet unit along the back wall. We hope to get that going soon-ish, although we don’t want to overpay for materials either. Being at Home Depot this weekend and seeing the current lumber prices made us glad we got the deck finished last year!
